SCOPE OF ACTIVITIES

Methods to Involve Students in the Green School Programme

1. Green House System

Divide students into Green Houses (Earth, Water, Air, Forest, Biodiversity, Energy). Each house competes throughout the year in environmental activities, earning points for sustainability initiatives and teamwork.

2. Green Ambassador Programme

Select enthusiastic students from every class as Green Ambassadors. They lead campaigns, monitor environmental practices, mentor younger students, and represent their class in the School Green Council.

3. Eco Points Reward System

Introduce a point-based reward system where students earn "Eco Points" for actions such as:

  • Bringing reusable water bottles

  • Using cloth bags

  • Planting trees

  • Cycling or walking to school

  • Participating in clean-up drives

  • Reporting water leaks

  • Recycling waste

Classes or students with the highest points receive recognition each term.

4. Green Passport

Provide every student with a Green Passport containing environmental challenges to complete throughout the year.

Examples:

  • Plant a tree

  • Compost kitchen waste

  • Save electricity at home

  • Conduct a home waste audit

  • Avoid plastic for one week

  • Encourage five neighbours to segregate waste

Completed activities are verified by parents or teachers.

5. Environmental Detective Teams

Students become "Green Detectives" who identify environmental problems on campus and recommend practical solutions. They submit monthly reports to the Green Council.

6. Adopt-a-Tree Programme

Every student or class adopts a tree for the year, caring for it by watering, mulching, measuring growth, and protecting it. Growth records can be maintained as part of science activities.

7. Green Classroom Competition

Classes compete to become the "Greenest Classroom" based on:

  • Cleanliness

  • Waste segregation

  • Energy conservation

  • Plastic-free practices

  • Indoor plants

  • Environmental displays

A monthly Green Classroom Award encourages healthy competition.

8. Citizen Science Projects

Engage students in collecting real environmental data:

  • Rainfall measurements

  • Air quality observations

  • Bird and butterfly counts

  • Tree inventory

  • Water quality testing

  • Temperature monitoring

Students analyse findings and present them during assemblies or science fairs.

9. Green Innovation Challenge

Organize an annual competition where students develop innovative environmental solutions, such as:

  • Water-saving devices

  • Plastic alternatives

  • Solar-powered models

  • Recycling inventions

  • Composting systems

  • Smart irrigation ideas

Projects can be showcased during a Green Expo.

10. Green Entrepreneurship Fair

Encourage students to create eco-friendly products such as reusable bags, compost, seed balls, recycled crafts, natural cleaners, or herbal products. The fair promotes sustainability while introducing entrepreneurial skills.

11. Digital Green Champions

Students create:

  • Short environmental videos

  • Podcasts

  • Blogs

  • Infographics

  • Social media campaigns

  • Photography contests

Outstanding content can be shared on the school's and PlanetPeople Foundation's digital platforms.

12. Zero Waste Lunch Challenge

Designate one day each week as a Zero Waste Lunch Day, encouraging reusable containers, minimal packaging, and food waste reduction. Classes achieving the lowest waste receive recognition.

13. Green Assemblies

Assign each class responsibility for one environmental assembly during the year. Presentations can include:

  • Skits

  • Songs

  • Debates

  • Demonstrations

  • Documentary screenings

  • Environmental pledges

14. Campus Biodiversity Mapping

Students identify and document trees, birds, butterflies, insects, and flowering plants on campus. They create a digital biodiversity map and maintain annual records to track ecological changes.

15. Home Sustainability Challenge

Students complete environmental tasks with their families, such as:

  • Reducing electricity consumption

  • Composting kitchen waste

  • Harvesting rainwater

  • Eliminating single-use plastics

  • Planting home gardens

Parents certify completion, strengthening school-home partnerships.

16. Environmental Celebration Calendar

Celebrate key environmental observances through student-led activities, including:

  • World Environment Day

  • Earth Day

  • World Water Day

  • World Wildlife Day

  • International Day of Forests

  • Energy Conservation Day

  • Ozone Day

  • International Plastic Bag Free Day

17. Green Leadership Camps

Conduct one-day or weekend leadership camps where students participate in nature walks, survival skills, environmental games, conservation workshops, and community service projects.

18. Inter-School Green League

Partner with neighbouring schools to organize friendly competitions in:

  • Tree plantation

  • Waste reduction

  • Environmental quizzes

  • Green innovation

  • Clean campus initiatives

  • Climate action projects

19. QR Code Learning Trail

Install QR codes around the campus on trees, gardens, compost units, and rainwater harvesting systems. Students scan the codes to access videos, quizzes, and environmental information, creating an interactive outdoor classroom.

20. Annual Green Impact Awards

Recognize outstanding contributions through awards such as:

  • Green Ambassador of the Year

  • Green Teacher Award

  • Green Classroom Award

  • Eco Innovator Award

  • Best Environmental Project

  • Green Family Award

  • Sustainable School Champion

Recognition motivates continued participation and celebrates environmental leadership.
